Voters take to the polls to cast ballots on school levies, mayoral races

It's Election Day! Voters will cast their ballots on a number of issues today, including school levies and mayoral races.

Voters in 41 Northeast Ohio school districts will see levies on the ballot.

Seven cities in Cuyahoga County hope voters will approve levies, including Euclid, Garfield Heights, Olmsted Falls, Strongsville, Brecksville and Broadview Heights.

In Olmsted Falls, the 2.8 mill permanent improvement levy would raise 1.4 million dollars annually.
If passed there will be building improvements for the schools, including a new roof for the high school.

In Brecksville/Broadview Heights, the school district has a levy on the ballot.
If it fails additional cuts will be made, including certain classes.

In Euclid, the school has a levy on the ballot.
If the levy fails millions in cuts will have to be made. Those cuts will impact the classroom.

In Garfield Heights, there is a new 9 mill five-year operating levy and renewal of 6.6 mill five-year operating levy. No change in taxes for this renewal. The district faces many challenges with lots of new students and declining property values.
Teacher pay has been flat as well.

In Maple Heights, there is new 1.5 percent income tax for schools. The schools have already made large staff cuts.

In Parma, school officials hope the 8th time is the charm.
Seven previous levy attempts have already failed. Without new money Parma schools will go into fiscal emergency. Since 2008 the district has cut 18-million dollars from their budget.

In Strongsville, a 9.9 mill continuing operating levy is on the ballot. If the levy fails the school will try again in August. But, if that fails 4.5 million dollars in cuts are needed for the 2011-2012 school year. On top of the 4-million in cuts required by May. Plans are to cut salaries and benefits. Possibly eliminating middle school German and French classes, two industrial arts teachers and support staff.

19 Action News closely watching the mayoral race in Berea, as the current Mayor, Cyril Kleem, is facing off against challenger James Brown.

Kleem was the target of a police investigation, one that could have an impact on the outcome of today's election.
